- My take
I am not a financial adviser. I am a performer with 14 years in the adult industry, and I have watched friends build careers on cam sites, on OnlyFans and on both. This is the honest comparison I wish someone had given them on day one.
What camming is
Camming is live streaming on adult cam sites. You go online at scheduled hours, chat with viewers in real time, and they tip you with tokens. You can run public shows with tip goals, private shows paid by the minute, and interactive shows where tips trigger reactions.
It is not new. In April 1996, a college student called Jennifer Ringley started JenniCam, streaming her daily life from a webcam, and the idea of paying to watch real people live grew from there. Today cam sites are a large industry of their own, with thousands of performers online at any moment.
What OnlyFans is
OnlyFans is a subscription platform. Fans pay a monthly fee to see your posts, and you earn extra from tips and pay-per-view (PPV) messages. Content can be photos, videos, text or occasional live streams. OnlyFans keeps 20% and pays the creator 80% of fan payments, as I explained in how OnlyFans works.
The scale is huge. OnlyFans said it paid creators $6.3 billion in the fiscal year to November 2025 (Variety). The numbers are in my breakdown of OnlyFans business figures.
Camming is a performance. OnlyFans is a business. You can be great at one and struggle at the other.
How the money works on each
Camming. Viewers buy tokens from the site and tip them to you. The site sets the value you receive per token. Chaturbate, one of the biggest sites, says broadcasters receive $0.05 per token, with payouts twice a month once you pass a minimum amount (Chaturbate support). Rates and cuts differ from site to site, so always read the payout page before you start.
What this means in practice: your income is tied to hours online and to how well you keep a room engaged. A slow night pays little. A great private show can pay a lot.
OnlyFans. Your income comes from three streams:
- Subscriptions, which you price yourself. See how to price an OnlyFans subscription.
- Tips on posts and messages.
- PPV messages, which for many top creators are the biggest earner.
Content you made months ago can still sell. That is the big advantage: OnlyFans income can be partly passive, while camming income stops when you log off.
The hard truth on both: income is very unequal. A small minority earns most of the money. I covered this in how much OnlyFans creators really make.
Time: live hours vs a content calendar
Camming rewards consistency. Regular performers go online at the same times so fans know when to find them. A typical shift can be several hours, and you need energy for the whole show.
OnlyFans rewards planning. You shoot content in batches, schedule posts, answer messages and promote yourself on social media. It can fit around another job, but the messaging alone can become a full-time job, which is why many big creators hire chatters, a practice with its own problems, as I explained in OnlyFans chatters and agencies.

Where the fans come from
This is the biggest difference, and most beginners get it wrong.
Cam sites have their own traffic. Thousands of viewers browse the homepage looking for someone live right now. A new performer with a good camera, light and attitude can get viewers on the first night.
OnlyFans has almost no discovery. There is no real homepage that sends fans to new creators. You bring your own audience from X, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok or elsewhere. If nobody knows you exist, nobody subscribes. I wrote a full guide on how to promote OnlyFans.
That is why performers who already have a following, from porn, modelling or social media, often do well on OnlyFans quickly, while unknown beginners often find camming easier to start.
Privacy, leaks and safety
Both carry real risks:
- Live is unpredictable. On cam, a letter on your desk, a window view or your voice saying a name can reveal more than you want. And live shows can be recorded by viewers.
- OnlyFans content is permanent. Everything you upload can be downloaded and pirated, even though sharing it is a breach of the terms.
- Region blocking. Some cam sites let performers block viewers from chosen countries or regions. Check what each platform offers.
- Stage name and separation. Use a stage name, separate emails and phones, and never film anything that shows where you live.
I covered this in depth in OnlyFans creator privacy and safety.
Burnout and mental health
Camming can be exhausting: long hours “on”, constant attention to the chat, and rude viewers in real time. OnlyFans burnout looks different: endless messages, pressure to post, and the feeling that you can never switch off.
On both, set limits: fixed working hours, days off, clear rules for what you will and will not do, and people outside the industry you can talk to.
Doing both: the hybrid model
Many creators combine them:
- Cam to find fans, because cam sites have traffic.
- OnlyFans to keep them, with exclusive content, longer videos and personal messages.
- Social media to feed both.
OnlyFans also has its own live streaming feature, so some creators run live shows for their subscribers there. Before linking platforms, read each site’s terms about promoting other services, because some restrict it.
Which one is for you?
A simple guide:
- Choose camming first if you have no audience yet, enjoy performing live, like real-time interaction and can commit to regular hours.
- Choose OnlyFans first if you already have a following, prefer planning and editing, want income that keeps selling, and are ready to market yourself every day.
- Choose both if you can handle the workload and want stability, because one platform can carry you when the other has a slow month.
My take
I have seen people make a living from each, and I have seen people quit each after two weeks. The platform matters less than the person. Camming rewards charisma and stamina. OnlyFans rewards discipline and marketing. Both reward consistency more than looks.
If I were advising a friend, I would say: start with what fits your personality, treat it like a business from the first day, keep your private life private, and never measure yourself against the top 1%. They are the exception, not the rule.
