Every week I see the same question from new creators: “Should I go on Patreon or OnlyFans?” Usually the person asking thinks Patreon is just a more respectable OnlyFans, with lower fees and less stigma.
That is half true and half dangerously wrong. Patreon does allow some adult content, but it has a line that many creators do not discover until their page is suspended. So let me explain it clearly.
What Patreon is built for
Patreon is a membership platform founded in 2013 for creators of all kinds: podcasters, YouTubers, musicians, artists, writers, game developers. Fans pay a monthly membership for exclusive content and community.
Its identity is mainstream. That is its strength, and the reason its adult rules are stricter than many people expect.
Patreon’s adult rules, in plain words
Patreon’s Community Guidelines allow “Adult/18+ works” if creators follow specific rules (Patreon Community Guidelines). In plain words:
- You must be in the Adult/18+ category and complete an age verification to confirm you are at least 18, which Patreon says is required by payment processors.
- Anyone real who appears in your work must give written consent.
- Nudity and sexual themes must be behind the paywall. The public parts of your page, such as profile image, banner, tier descriptions and free posts, must be free of nudity.
- Real human nudity is allowed on Adult/18+ pages, if it does not cross into the prohibited categories.
- Real sexual activity is not allowed. The guidelines say: “Works depicting sexual activity between real, adult participants are not permitted.” That includes masturbation, oral, vaginal or anal sex, simulated sex with toys and visible arousal.
- Explicit sexual activity is allowed only in non-real formats: illustration, animation, writing or audio.
Patreon allows nudity. It does not allow porn. If you remember one sentence from this article, make it that one.
So boudoir photography, artistic nude sets, erotic writing, adult illustration and audio stories can live on Patreon. A real sex scene cannot.
What OnlyFans allows
OnlyFans allows explicit adult content, including real sexual activity, for verified creators, provided everyone featured is verified and consents and the content follows its Terms and Acceptable Use Policy (OnlyFans Terms of Service; OnlyFans Acceptable Use Policy).
That is why most adult performers who sell scenes use OnlyFans, Fansly or Fanvue rather than Patreon. I compared those three in OnlyFans vs Fansly vs Fanvue.
Fees: 10% vs 20%
Money matters:
- Patreon: according to its pricing page, a 10% platform fee, plus payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees and applicable taxes (Patreon pricing). Creators who joined earlier may be on older plans with different rates.
- OnlyFans: a 20% cut of subscriptions, tips and pay-per-view, with creators keeping 80%. I explained the details in how OnlyFans works: fees and payouts.
On paper, Patreon is cheaper. In practice, the question is not only the percentage, but how much you can actually sell on each platform.

AI content on each platform
Both platforms have strict AI rules for adult content, but they differ:
- Patreon allows AI-generated adult characters that are clearly animated or illustrated, but hyperrealistic adult depictions must use the likeness of real adults who have documented their consent. It bans AI adult generators, AI sexbots that create user-generated imagery and tutorials on making hyperrealistic adult AI works (Patreon Community Guidelines).
- OnlyFans allows AI-generated or AI-altered content only if it clearly features the verified creator and is labelled, for example with #ai (OnlyFans Acceptable Use Policy).
I went deeper into this in AI models on OnlyFans and Fanvue.
Audience, discovery and reputation
Reputation. Patreon is associated with podcasts, art and YouTubers. Saying “support me on Patreon” in public sounds very different from “subscribe to my OnlyFans”. For some creators, especially those with a mainstream career, that matters a lot.
Audience expectations. People who subscribe on OnlyFans often expect explicit or very intimate content. Patreon members usually expect access, process and community.
Discovery. Neither platform does much to bring you new fans. On both, you need to promote yourself on social media, which I explained in how to promote OnlyFans; the same principles apply on Patreon.
Risk. On Patreon, the risk is crossing a line you did not know existed and having your page restricted. On OnlyFans, the risk is the stigma and the permanence of explicit content, which I covered in OnlyFans creator privacy and safety.
The comparison table
| Patreon | OnlyFans | |
|---|---|---|
| Real nudity | Yes, on Adult/18+ pages, behind paywall | Yes |
| Real sexual activity | Not allowed | Allowed, with verification and consent |
| Illustrated or written explicit content | Allowed on Adult/18+ pages | Allowed |
| Public page | Must be free of nudity | Profile must follow rules; explicit content behind paywall |
| Platform fee | 10% plus processing fees (current pricing) | 20% |
| AI adult content | Animated/illustrated allowed; hyperrealistic only with real consenting adults | Only if it clearly features the verified creator, labelled |
| Reputation | Mainstream | Strongly associated with adult content |
Who should choose which
Choose OnlyFans (or Fansly/Fanvue) if:
- your content includes real sexual activity;
- your audience already expects explicit content;
- you sell a lot through private messages and pay-per-view.
Consider Patreon if:
- you create artistic nudity, boudoir, glamour or lingerie photography;
- you make adult illustration, comics, erotic writing or audio;
- you have a mainstream audience and want to keep a mainstream image;
- you want lower platform fees and a community-based model.
Many creators use both: a Patreon for the “softer”, community side and a separate adult platform for explicit work. If you do that, keep the two clearly separated and never put explicit material on Patreon.
A practical checklist before you launch
Before you open either page, go through these questions honestly:
- What exactly will I post in month one, month three and month twelve? Creators often start soft and become more explicit over time. If that is your plan, Patreon will stop fitting at some point, and moving an audience later is painful.
- Is everyone in my content verified and has given written consent? Both platforms require it for real people who appear in your work.
- Is my public page clean? On Patreon, the profile picture, banner, tier descriptions and free posts must be free of nudity. Many suspensions start there, not behind the paywall.
- How will people find me? Write down your promotion plan before you launch. A page without traffic earns nothing, whatever the fee.
- What will I do if my account is restricted? Keep your own list of fans, your own website and backups of your work. Never depend 100% on one platform.
- Have I calculated my real income after fees and taxes? The platform fee is only one part. Read my OnlyFans taxes guide; most of it applies to Patreon income too.
My take
Patreon is a good platform. It is just not a porn platform, and pretending it is will cost you your page. I respect that it is clear about its rules, even if I would like the adult industry to be treated with less fear by payment companies, a problem I explained in why banks and card networks fear porn.
My advice is simple: decide what you really want to sell, read the rules of the platform before you upload anything, and choose the home that fits your content, not the one with the nicest logo. The lowest fee in the world is worth nothing if your account is suspended.
